Matt Cassel hurt his hand late in the game against Denver on Sunday. Now, coach Todd Haley called the injury "significant" (surgery required) and said he could miss the rest of the year.
The Chiefs looked like "Suck for Luck" favorites, and won some close games against bad teams (Minnesota, Indianapolis, and Kyle Boller led the team to Oakland) before it was destroyed by the Dolphins and then lose against a team that has completed two tours, both here at home. They are tied for third worst point differential with Cassel, and now the quarterback on the list is PALKO Tyler, who is your dreaded type mobile inaccurate, and rookie Ricky Stanza of Iowa.
Of course, leaders do not play as good as they were last year - a 10-6 season saw AFC West win the division and get to host a playoff game at home, but they are still just a game out of first in their division and their roles, there are patriots created the potential linked match-up with them very interesting.
Well, the new Kansas City can reduce your enthusiasm for next Monday night. According to Kent Babb of the Kansas City Star, Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel has an injury "significant" the hand that will require surgery and could end his campaign in 2011. The new pretty well eliminates any possibility of him playing against the Patriots next week.
“This has been a fluid situation,” Haley said.
Tyler Palko(notes) played the final offensive series against Denver, leading the Chiefs to a field goal, even though Cassel said after the game that he wanted to play.
“I was a little banged up, so that’s what kept me out,” Cassel said, adding that he thought he’d be OK to play at New England next Monday night. “I wanted to go but I was told not to.”
The injury turned out to be more severe than anyone expected.
PALKO was informed by the quarterback coach Jim Zorn on Monday it will likely get his first start against the Patriots in the NFL. Fifth round draft choice Ricky Stanza (notes), who has been inactive all season, will return, although Kansas City could sign a veteran free agent for depth.
“I’m really close with Matt and we’ve been through a lot these last two years,” Palko said in the Chiefs’ mostly empty locker room Monday afternoon. “You hate to see anybody go down like this, but it’s football, and you just have to be ready.”
One point I would stress is that Haley still holds hope that Cassel can go back to one hour. Perhaps the way the rest of the season unfolds, so will be a Cassel returns this season.
