Two earthquakes shake San Francisco Bay area

The U.S. Geological Survey says an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 3.9 occurred at 20:16, about three miles east of Berkeley.

On Thursday night the earthquake struck after an earthquake measuring 4.0 on the same area almost six hours earlier.

Berkeley police say they have no reports of damage or injury is caused by the earthquake.

Earthquake Thursday comes almost 22 years after the Loma Prieta earthquake struck the day Bay Area during the 1989 World Series.

The 6.9-magnitude earthquake killed 63 people, injured some 3,800 and caused $ 10 billion to the damage.

Thursday morning, about 8.5 million people in California, including about 1.3 million Bay Area alone, took part in the great shakeout, a response to the earthquake drill.

And Mayor Lee said in a statement matinees earthquake has highlighted the importance of drilling.

"The question is when, if not, there will be a great earthquake in San Francisco Bay Area," Lee said.

The two earthquakes growled public transport in about half an hour, with Muni and Bart trains stop to check the damage. Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn said the earthquake did not disrupt the Caltrain service.

The earthquake also came nearly 22 years after the Loma Prieta earthquake hit the day's Bay area on October 17, 1989, during the World Series.
